The Advanced Food Ingredients Program is a unique opportunity to build an industry-leading team and platform to support the plant-based industry through advanced food ingredient processing, industrial fermentation and bioengineering technologies. The program provides an opportunity to expand both capacity and capabilities in new innovative food ingredient (protein, starch, fibre, fermented ingredients) manufacturing, modification and other acellular and mycelium-based food products and ingredients. The program will also focus on the development of new products that provide outstanding nutritional and functional benefits.
The successful candidate will provide leadership for a new initiative in fermentation, bioengineering and advanced food ingredient development. The program’s primary focus is to assist the industry in commercializing new technologies in the fermentation and protein space. The candidate will propose and develop strategies for new product and ingredients development utilizing fermentation and bioengineering technologies working with the team and an array of ecosystem partners in fermentation. In addition, the candidate will be involved in designing downstream processing, producing innovative nutritional and functional ingredients, efficient scale-up of new technologies and operational excellence for the centre’s advanced processing platform.
This is a senior-level position accountable to the Food Centre leadership that builds and delivers strategy aligned with its clients and stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- M.Sc./Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Food Science & Technology or any closely related fields with 5+ years of work experience
- Prior experience working with fermentation processes (submerged and solid-state), down-stream processing and scale-up of technologies from the laboratory bench-top to pilot and production plants
- A background in laboratory and processing quality assurance and process troubleshooting
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex scientific information into easily understood, accessible language
- A team player who engages quickly with both internal teams and external collaborators
- Strong technical writing and proposal writing/reporting experience and proven success in project execution
- Solution-orientated with maintaining flexible and adaptive approaches to support industrial commercialization of fermentation and related technology platforms.
Core Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and coaching to team members as appropriate
- Direct liaisons with entrepreneurs, SMEs, and institutions to assist in commercializing new technologies in fermentation, bioengineering, plant-based foods and ingredients.
- Support the development of an industry and research ecosystem focused on fermentation and separation technologies.
- Develop strategies, partnerships, and collaborations within the ecosystem and industry to support the growth of Canada’s food and ingredient sector.
- Develop strategies to support the use of plant-based materials in fermentation and bioengineering technology to advance the development of modified proteins or novel ingredients
- Develop a research and development strategy with an execution plan aligned to the project objectives.
- Maintain clear and timely communication on R&D activities to the leadership team
- Support the development and engineering teams with expertise and considerations for process modelling and capital projects
- Provide support for planning and implementation of R&D infrastructure
- Develop and maintain annual budgets

The Agri-Food Innovation Centre is looking to hire a Full Time Sanitation Lead position to assist in coordinating sanitation requirements within our Schuyler Street facility.

The Food Centre has an immediate opening for a full time position in Maintenance. The position will assist in general equipment servicing, routine maintenance of facilities and equipment.
Applicants should have a minimum of 2 years experience or equivalent training in a related field in maintenance, be mechanically inclined with a good knowledge of equipment functions (electrical/electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical) and general building repairs. They must be able to self manage themselves with a willingness to learn, basic computer skills and maintain a log book is required. The position requires a Journeymen certificate in electrical or Millwright
